Server Virtualisation introduction

Server virtualisation is one of the biggest and most exciting changes in the x86 server market since the introduction of Windows 2000 Server, and for good reason too.

Virtualisation offers some very real benefits, cost savings and significantly reduces wastage, thereby increasing your return on investment.

Given the right planning, a virtualised server deployment gives you an opportunity to recover far more quickly from a server failure. In a traditional server environment, recovering from a server failure requires similar or identical hardware, and often up to 8 hours of work to get the server up and running again after restoring from tape. In comparison, in a virtualised environment, the virtual machine may be down as little as a minute (in an unexpected failure) and zero down time (when the failure is pre-empted).

Virtualisation does add complexity to the network environment so it is essential that your deployment be carefully planned so as to avoid down-time and headaches in the future.
